There are some wonderful coastal paths near Edinburgh that can be accessed by public transport. Check out some of our tried and tested recommendations for the perfect weekend hiking trip.

Fife Coast

The Fife Coastal Path is a 183km trail that winds its way along the stunning Fife coastline. Starting from the Firth of Forth in the south and stretching to the Firth of Tay in the north, this scenic route offers a delightful journey through historic fishing villages, dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, and serene countryside. Option 1: Pittenweem to Crail, 10km

Option 2: Lower Largo to Anstruther, 19km

If you have two days:

Option 1: Anstruther to St Andrews, 30km

Option 2: Lower Largo to St Andrews, 50km

Public transport options

John Muir Way/ Berwickshire Coast

The John Muir Way and Berwickshire Coastal Paths are picturesque trails that stretch along the coastline of southeastern Scotland. Using the John Muir Way as your starting point, and then joining the John Muir Link, these scenic routes can take you from North Berwick in East Lothian to the Scottish Borders town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. As you wander along this coastal path, you'll encounter dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, charming fishing villages, and an array of wildlife. The path is dotted with historical landmarks, such as castles and ancient ruins, providing a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. 🌊🥾🏰

North Berwick to Cocksburnpath, 39km
